Can you use heat on synthetic hair?
It depends entirely on the fibre, and this is where most of the confusion comes from.
Standard synthetic fibre: no. It is essentially fine plastic filament. Put a straightener on it and it melts, fuses, or goes permanently frizzy. This is the fibre in most cheap fashion wigs, and it is why "you can't use heat on synthetic" became the received wisdom.
Heat-resistant synthetic fibre: yes, within a stated temperature range. It is engineered to hold a style applied with hot tools and to survive being restyled. This is what the majority of our range is made from, and it is the reason we list a temperature on almost every product page.
So "are synthetic wigs heat resistant?" has no single answer. Some are, some are not, and the only reliable way to know is a stated rating from whoever sold it to you. If a listing does not give you a number, assume it is not rated.
What temperature can you use on a synthetic wig?
Across our range the ratings are 160°C (320°F) or 180°C (356°F), depending on the wig. Not one blanket number, which is why we publish it per model rather than making a general claim.
For context, a domestic straightener will happily run to 230°C on its top setting. That is well past the point where even 180°C-rated fibre gives up. Turning the dial down is the single most important thing on this page.

A small number of units in the range are described as heat-resistant without a published number, and a few are not heat-rated at all. If your wig is one of those, do not guess. Treat it as unrated and skip the hot tools.
What actually happens if you go too hot
It is worth knowing what you are risking, because the damage is not gradual and it is not reversible.
- Just over the rating: the fibre goes coarse and slightly dull. It will still comb, but it never quite recovers its softness.
- Well over: the fibre kinks into a permanent crimp. No amount of washing or brushing takes it out.
- Far over: it melts and fuses into a hard clump, usually welded to the plate of your straightener.
None of this can be undone. Human hair gives you warning signs and some room to recover. Synthetic fibre does not. This is the reason the advice is always to start low.
Test on a hidden section first
Before you commit, take a small section from the nape, underneath, where nothing shows. Style it at the temperature you intend to use, let it cool completely, then feel it. If it is soft and moves normally, carry on. If it feels stiff, wiry, or looks glassy, come down 20°C and test again.
This takes two minutes and it is the difference between finding out on a hidden inch and finding out on your parting.
How to curl a heat-resistant synthetic wig
- Start dry. A hot wand on wet fibre turns the trapped water to steam against the barrel, and that is what wrecks it. Fully dry, always. (Curling with water is a different method entirely, and a very good one. See the wet set below.)
- Detangle first with a wide-tooth comb, working from the ends upwards. Styling over a knot bakes the knot in.
- Set your wand below the rating. If the wig is rated to 160°C, start at 140°C. You can go up. You cannot come back.
- Work in small sections and hold for a few seconds only. Longer does not mean better, it means hotter.
- Drop each curl and leave it. Do not pull it straight to check it.
- Let it cool completely before touching it. See below, this is the step people skip.
How to straighten a heat-resistant synthetic wig
- Dry, detangled, same as above.
- Set the iron below the rating and test on the hidden nape section.
- Take thin sections. A thick section forces you to go over it repeatedly, which does more damage than one pass at a slightly higher heat.
- One smooth pass, root to tip, without stopping. Pausing is what creates a scorch line.
- Let each section cool flat before you move it.
The wet set, which holds longer than any wand curl
If you want curls that last, this is the better method, and it uses no hot tools at all.
- Damp the hair with a detangling or setting spray. Damp, not soaking.
- Section it and wind each section onto rollers, flexi rods, or a curling brush.
- Either leave it to dry completely in place, ideally overnight, or dip each roller into hot water and then let it cool fully.
- Unroll only once it is completely cool and dry. Unrolling early undoes the whole thing.
- Separate the curls with your fingers rather than a brush, and finish with a light hold spray if you want it to stay tight.
This works for the same reason the cooling step below matters: synthetic fibre sets as it cools. A wet set cools slowly and in position, so the shape holds for weeks or months rather than until the next wash. It is also the gentlest option on the fibre, because there is no direct heat on the hair at any point.
The cooling step, which is where most styling goes wrong
Synthetic fibre holds its new shape as it cools, not while it is hot. It works like a hot metal spoon setting once it leaves the mould. If you run your fingers through a curl the second you release it from the wand, you pull the shape straight back out and wonder why it did not hold.
Let each section cool fully, ideally on a mannequin head or a wig stand, before brushing or wearing it. On a full head that means giving it ten minutes before you touch anything. It is the single biggest difference between a style that lasts the day and one that drops within the hour.
How often can you heat style the same wig?
Heat-resistant does not mean heat-proof, and every styling session costs the fibre a little. Repeated high-heat styling will shorten the life of any synthetic wig.
If you restyle often, stay at the lower end of the rated range rather than the top of it, and give the fibre a break between heavy styling days. A wig styled at 140°C twice a week will outlast the same wig styled at 180°C twice a week by a comfortable margin.
Heat misuse is the single most common reason a synthetic wig wears out early, ahead of washing or friction.

What you must not do is put a hot iron or wand directly onto wet fibre. The trapped water flashes to steam against the plates and that is what causes the damage. So: water and rollers with no iron, or a dry tool on dry hair. Never both at once.
What temperature melts synthetic hair?
